Wishing

Ryon stared down into the dark water. They’d sailed for a full day and night before Muse called for a halt. The waters here, south and east of his island home, were far deeper and darker than the clear shallow seas they’d first sailed.

“Are you sure this is the spot?” Ryon whistled quietly.

“Yes. This is where she is. I can feel it,” Muse replied.

“The island is somewhere below us,” Ryon announced.

Aren nodded and tied down the sail.

“What’s the plan now?” Violet asked. “Do we all use one of those feathers and wish to swim like fish?”

“You two are going without me,” Aren said. “Someone needs to stay up here to make sure the raft doesn’t float off course. I would ask you to do it, Vi, but I don’t think you’d have the strength to man the oars.”

Violet turned to him with a frown. “Are you sure, Uncle Aren?”

“Yeah. I’ve thought it through. If something has happened to Lark down there, I don’t trust myself not to rush in after her and get myself captured. And like I said, someone has to man the oars. We don’t have an anchor, and the water here looks too deep for one, even if we had one.” Aren loosed a long, low sigh. “Besides, if what your mother told you is true, then you’re meant to do this, Vi. I don’t want to mess around with fate. Not when Lark’s life depends on it.”

Ryon sensed there was more to it than that. From the looks of the blond man’s tense shoulders and the way he violently knotted the rope around the folded mast, he wanted nothing more than to go after his wife.

Aren was likely thinking of the little boy back on that island. As much as he loved his wife, he loved his son just the same. If something went wrong in the underwater city, he wanted to ensure Dylen didn’t grow up an orphan.

Ryon could certainly respect that decision, even if Aren didn’t want to voice it. Duty and loyalty to family was one thing he understood intimately.

Violet walked to her uncle’s side and clasped him in a tight hug. “We’ll find her. We’ll find them all.”

“I know you will.” Aren offered her a pinched smile, then swung his gaze to Ryon. “Keep her safe.”

“I will,” Ryon vowed.

Violet pulled free from her uncle’s embrace and crossed the raft to his side. She dug into her pocket and withdrew the shining silver feather he’d given her. “You’re sure this is going to work?” she wrinkled her nose, staring down at the soft feather on her palm.

“It will.” Ryon reached into his hair with his knife and slit one of his dreadlocks. He pulled free a feather for himself.

After they used these, that would leave him with ten. Not a lot, considering the wishes had to last them long enough to escape with Violet’s family. They’d likely need three more just to ensure the others could survive the swim back to the raft.
